Local Landmarks Go Purple For National Crime Victims’ Rights Week

DES MOINES, Iowa (April 12, 2018) — Local landmarks across the Des Moines metro area have been lit up purple this week in honor of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week (NCVRW) which is being held across the country, April 8 – 14.

Gov. Kim Reynolds recently signed a proclamation declaring NCVRW in Iowa, which is held every April to ensure victims of crime are afforded their rights. It’s also a time to raise awareness for victims’ services, promote laws that protect victims and reaffirm commitments to helping those most affected by crime.

Marsy’s Law for Iowa today highlighted the lighting of the landmarks as a positive visual to call attention to victims during this week.

“The purple landmarks dotting our skyline are a powerful visual reminder of what we’re calling attention to this week—crime victims in Iowa,” said Eric Baker, Marsy’s Law for Iowa’s state director. “We appreciate the support of local landmarks throughout Iowa who are supporting our efforts this week.”

Attached are photos of the Financial Center in Downtown Des Moines, which will be lit Wednesday, April 11 and Thursday, April 12. As well as drone footage from the Altoona Water Tower, which will be lit all week. Drone footage of the water tower may be found here and is available for use by media outlets:

Marsy’s Law for Iowa is a grassroots coalition committed to giving victims of crime equal constitutional rights and protections in our state. Marsy’s Law is named after Marsalee “Marsy” Nicholas of California who was stalked and killed by her ex-boyfriend in 1983. Only a week after her murder, Marsy’s mother and brother walked into a grocery store where they were confronted by the accused murderer. The family had no idea he had been released on bail.
